Shoebox Project

Shoebox Project

Nanaimo North Town Centre is proud to announce its returning partnership with the Shoebox Project Nanaimo.

The Centre’s Administration Office (located inside near Subway & the Liquor Store) is a drop-off spot for shoebox donations, making it easy for everyone to contribute. Please drop off your shoebox donation by December 11th.

What is the Shoe Box Project?

The Shoebox Project is an unaffiliated, non-religious, Canadian charity that supports women experiencing (or at-risk-of) homelessness, and one that celebrates diversity, builds awareness, challenges stigma and promotes equity.

When we use the term ‘women’ we use it in an inclusive manner and are mindful of the diverse and intersecting identities of the people who we support.

What is a Shoebox Gift?

A personally crafted gift that contains a mix of essential everyday items and small luxuries
that you or any woman would love!

How to create a Shoe Box:

1. Find a standard Shoebox (approximately 14″x8″x5″) and wrap it, or use a pre-decorated giftbox.

2. Fill your Shoebox with all must-haves (see list below).

3. Write an inspirational message of support.

4. Drop it off at the Administration Office at Nanaimo North Town Centre.

Before you start, follow these guidelines:
  • Leave your Shoebox gift unsealed. Wrap the top and bottom of the Shoebox separately so that it can be opened for inspection.
  • Your shoebox should look as beautiful as it is a gift- make sure the wrapping has no rips & tears.
  • Do not include bows or ornaments, as Shoeboxes will be stacked.

What goes into a Shoebox:

  • Each Shoebox must be valued at $50
  • Gift Card (we recommend $10 to a grocery or drug store chain)
  • Shampoo & Conditioner (please consider all hair types and textures)
  • Body Wash
  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste
  • Socks
  • Chocolate/Candy
  • Cosmetics (lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, nail polish, etc)
  • A cozy accessory (hand warmers, hat, mitts, scarf)
  • Skincare (sunscreen, face cream, body/hand lotion, cleanser)
  • Self-care (journal, facial mask, eye mask, lip balm)

Please do not include:

  • Used goods
  • Unpackaged items
  • Hotel/Free Samples
  • Sized clothing (i.e. S, M, L, XL)
  • Products containing alcohol (i.e.. mouthwash and sanitizer)
  • Candles
  • Foundations, concealers or any product for a specific skin tone
  • Tampons & sanitary napkins (these are donated separately)
  • Razors, nail kits or anything that could cause harm
  • Jumbo-sized containers (1L)
  • Perfume and heavily fragranced products
  • Children’s products
Bonus: Share your photos on social media using the hashtag #ShoeboxProject.
Tag @NanaimoNorthTownCentre with your Shoebox so we can share and help us raise awareness and inspire others to contribute.
